Articles - Just for Fun

It's that time of the week again! Time to share your works in progress!  What has kept you busy this last week?  Remember, it can be any project, not just quilting.  Maybe you have found some neat Christmas gift ideas you are making.  Maybe you have just been like me, and been busy working to get those customer quilts back out the door.  Come to forum and tell us about it!

Question of the Week November 16
Articles - Question of the Week

Good Morning!  Welcome to another week. There is a nip in the air here this morning, very unusual for SW Florida, but a nice break from the heat.

Linda Card sent me some more questions she has been pondering, and since this particular issue came up last week, I thought we'd make it the question for this week; with Linda's permission of course.

So, the subject this week is "backings" and here are the related questions:

When a customer brings you a quilt, how carefully do you inspect the backing?

Do you get many with the selvages left on?

Do you cut the selvages off the quilt back?

Do you charge the customer for this service?

Do you press open the seams on a pieced back?

Good questions! And thanks Linda for sharing them.  Now, the rest of you head on over to the forum and join the discussion!

Ruler Round up
Articles - Resources

Well, we've done a list of quilting machine manufacturers and one of longarm quilting videos.  I thought it was time for a new list, and after reading some discussions in the forums the other day about ruler work, I decided a round up of all of the designers of rulers that I could think of was in order.

This list is most assuredly not complete (in fact, I kept thinking I was done, and would then think of another designer to add...).  I've included links at the beginning to two longarm quilting suppliers that carry many of the rulers, but I've also given you links to all of the designers themselves.  If you know of additions that I should make, or corrections, (or if you see any typos...) please respond in the forum post that I'll create for comments, or send me an e-mail!  I'll add (or correct) as needed!

I will also say that this list is in no particular order -- nor is it an endorsement of any of these designers or their rulers.  This is purely a list for your reference.

The "P" word

Our world is full of people wanting shortcuts.  We want to have everything and we don't want to wait -- we want what we want and we want it right now.  The situation with the US financial system is certainly indicative of that...but I'm not here to talk about such an unpleasant topic!!

As quilters we are no different -- we want to produce beautiful quilting and we want to do it yesterday.   Now, I'll grant you that there are some prodigies in the machine quilting world, but those prodigies are pretty few and far between.  The rest of us have to work at our craft, and what may look effortless is actually the result of many long years of hard work.

Practice might be spelled with 8 letters, but I'm sure many people consider it a "4-letter" word -- one that you'd rather not hear in your house and try to use as little as possible.  I'm here to tell you, though, that this particular "P" word and several of its friends are not as horrible as you might think, and I'd like to give you some tips and ideas about how to effectively practice.
